New year, new me - right? 🤩 We all start off the new year with great resolutions but sometimes we don't have all the ideas on how to implement our plans. This blog, however, is going to give you great tips on how to care for your spine AND how to implement it effectively.
1.Posture Awareness 🤸♂️
Start the year by paying attention to your posture. Whether you're sitting at a desk or standing in line, maintain a neutral spine position. Consider using a lumbar roll or a small pillow for lower back support. If you aren't sure if a lumbar pillow is for you, try using a hand towel rolled up into a log, placed horizontally in the small of your back. If it improves how your spine feels at the end of the day - then definitely consider using a lumbar pillow.
2. Desk Ergonomics 🖥️
If you spend long hours at a desk, ensure your workstation is ergonomically friendly. Adjust your chair and monitor height to reduce strain on your neck and back. Take short breaks to stretch and move around every 30 minutes. You can check out my previous blog on how to set up your desk.
3. Stretch Regularly 🙆♀️
Incorporate simple stretches into your daily routine. Cat-Cow stretches, neck rotations, and forward bends can help release tension in your spine. These stretches can be done in just a few minutes, making them easy to integrate into your busy schedule. Not sure how to stretch, or what to do? My website has FREE downloadable stretches for you to try.
4. Stay Active 🏃♀️
Regular exercise is crucial for spinal health. Choose activities you enjoy, whether it's walking, swimming, or yoga. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week to keep your spine and surrounding muscles strong. Consider doing this before you shower - that way you don't have to shower again after getting active!
5. Hydrate and Eat Well 🍌🫐
Proper nutrition is essential for overall health, including the health of your spine. Stay hydrated and consume a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D to support bone strength. Calcium comes from many foods such as almonds, cheese and yoghurt - which are easy to eat at your desk. Vitamin D is provided free of charge from our beautiful sun - just 10 minutes a day is all you need.
6. Mindful Movement 🧘♀️
Practice mindful movement techniques like yoga or Pilates. These activities promote flexibility, balance, and core strength, contributing to a healthier spine. Another great activity is core strengthening which avoids your spine muscles working too hard - as if they are still on summer holiday 😉
7. Invest in a Quality Mattress and Pillow 🛏️
Your sleep environment plays a significant role in spinal health. Invest in a mattress that provides adequate support and a pillow that maintains proper neck alignment. A good night's sleep is essential for the body's natural healing processes. Not sure which pillow is for you? All my patients are able to discuss their pillows with me as part of their consultation. There is a pillow to suit us all!
8. Chiropractic Check-Up 🙌
Last but not least, schedule a check-up with your chiropractor to ensure your spine and body are ready for all that 2024 has in store! A chiropractor can identify and address any misalignments, helping you prevent future issues and promoting overall well-being.
All together now ✨
